I know what you're thinking...

"Gah! Not another chalk-paint-it-and-add-new-knobs type!" Panic not. I'm Vic and first let me tell you what I don't do. I don't buy up all the perfectly decent second-hand furniture to give it a light facelift and sell it on for ridiculous amounts. IMHO that's just bad etiquette and stops other people getting their hands on much-needed furniture at affordable prices.

So, what do I do, then?

Well, I call myself a furniture rescuer, repairer and restyler, so let's start there.

  • I rescue furniture in two ways:

  1. I collect stuff that is going to be binned. In my book, if it only needs a straightforward repair and it's not rotten, it's not rubbish!

  2. I take on people's abandoned upcycles. I then either sell them on myself, or return them to the owner completed, for a fee, of course.

  • I repair furniture. I make the necessary repairs (within reason) to make the piece function again as intended.

  • I restyle furniture. Many older pieces of furniture are 'of an era'. Think french-polished dark wood, or 90s orange pine.  This is fine if you're after a certain aesthetic, but doesn't always fit in a modern home. I transform tired and/or damaged old furniture into unique, stylish pieces that wouldn't look out of place in Oliver Bonas. I do this with my own pieces or for clients on a commission basis.

Oh, and why is my blog called 'Out of the Eaves'?

Many of the items I've worked on have been things that people have been holding on to for one reason or another, but not actually using. People keep things because they came from someone or somewhere important, or simply because they, like me, refuse to chuck things away that could be brilliant again with a bit of time and expertise. Our houses shouldn't be glorified storage containers. If you can part with it, get that clutter out of the eaves and into someone's home again.

How and why did this all start?

Good question. I actually come at this from an unconventional angle. I am a qualified Spanish-to-English translator (and always looking for projects, by the way), blogger and teacher. But I have spent the last 10 years lovingly making over two houses and filling them with furniture I've revamped or made to suit my own style. So, after years of being told, "You could sell that", I'm flippin' well doing it! (And saving the planet one pedestal table at a time!)
